Heat should be used for injuries that are a day old and for chronic pain. Heat increases blood flow and soothes sore muscles.

Ice should be used for fresh injuries because when injured the tissue become inflamed causing swelling and pain. The ice slows down blood flow and relieves from pain, inflammation and swelling. But ice should not be used for more than 20 minutes.
