ISLAMABAD:

Minister for Planning and Development, Ahsan Iqbal, reiterated the government’s commitment to inclusive development, pointing out that every citizen, regardless of physical or mental ability, is integral to Pakistan’s growth. Speaking at the National Consultation on the United Nations Disability Inclusion Strategy, Iqbal highlighted initiatives focused on equitable progress.

Iqbal stressed the importance of human-centred policies, stating, “True development empowers people, not merely builds infrastructure.” He pointed to the government’s Vision 2025 strategy, which places human advancement, including support for people with disabilities, as a core objective.

The minister outlined four pillars necessary for sustainable development—peace, political stability, policy continuity, and progressive reforms. He acknowledged that political instability has hindered Pakistan’s progress but reaffirmed the commitment to a stable foundation for Vision 2025.

Initiatives supporting accessibility were also noted, including the government’s programme to provide electric wheelchairs to students with disabilities, along with mandatory ramps in universities. Recognising inspiring individuals, he spotlighted Khansa Maria, a visually impaired Rhodes Scholar.

Expressing gratitude for UN support, Iqbal said that disability inclusion aligns with Pakistan’s 5Es Framework, which promotes equitable opportunities for all citizens. He urged society to see potential in every individual, asserting that “disability is no barrier as long as one can dream and aspire.”
