Pakistan Rolls Out Digital System to Monitor Fuel Sales Across 12,000 Petrol Pumps
The government has decided to launch a Digital Fuel Management System across more than 12,000 petrol pumps nationwide, in what officials say is a major step toward improving transparency and control in Pakistan’s fuel distribution network.
According to officials, around 24,000 mobile devices have already been procured to support the system’s rollout, which will allow petrol pumps and authorities to digitally track fuel sales, stock levels, and distribution in real time.
The system has been integrated with the digital framework of Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority, allowing all transactions related to imported and locally distributed petroleum products to be monitored through a single digital platform.
Officials say the main aim is to reduce fraud, illegal hoarding, and fuel smuggling, which have remained longstanding concerns in the petroleum sector. The digital platform will allow authorities to monitor stock movement and sales activity live, making it easier to identify irregularities and unauthorized diversion of fuel supplies.
As part of the rollout, staff at petrol pumps are currently being trained by the Ministry of IT, NITB, and OGRA, with support from volunteers under the Prime Minister’s Youth Program.
Sources also said the government plans to introduce a fuel quota system for citizens, under which each vehicle owner may be assigned a specific petrol purchase limit through the mobile application.
Under the proposed system, individuals will not be able to buy fuel beyond their assigned quota. Testing of the mobile application has reportedly been completed, and the government is expected to formally announce the quota system soon. For ordinary consumers, this means fuel purchases may soon be linked to a mobile app based verification and quota system at petrol pumps across Pakistan.
